My name is Dr. Cameron Wimpy and I will be your professor for the course. Before the course begins, you should read the important beginning of term information found below and complete the Getting Started objectives.

Course Description & Prerequisites

Bulletin Description: The constitution, government, and politics of the United States.

Expanded Description: This course serves as an introduction to: The constitution, government, and politics of the United States. The main goal of this course is to help you understand the structure and processes of the American political system. This is accomplished by reading about and analyzing:

the key structures and institutions of government;
relevant political actors such as political parties, interest groups, and the media;
the electoral process;
voters and voting behavior.

Program Learning Outcomes

Effective Written Communication A graduate with the BA in Political Science will be able to communicate effectively, in writing, to a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes.
Effective Oral Communication A graduate with the BA in Political Science will be able to communicate effectively, in speech, to a variety of audiences and for a variety of purposes.
Critical Thinking Skills A graduate with the BA in Political Science will be able to demonstrate the critical thinking skills necessary to understand and evaluate what they hear, see, and read.
Awareness of Global Issues A graduate with a BA in Political Science will be able to demonstrate a broad awareness of the political and economic dimensions of the global environment.

Problem Solving Skills A graduate with a BA in Political Science will be prepared to play an active role in finding solutions to the problems which present direct threats to the global environment.

After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Explain the processes and effects of individual and group behavior
Analyze events in terms of the concepts and relational propositions
generated by the social science tradition
Have a working knowledge of the government of the United States
Understand the challenges of governing in the United States
Explain how individuals and groups interact to produce their
collective experience
Analyze empirical evidence to make reasoned arguments about government
of the United States
